Inner Healing 1: Gospel for the Soul

  1. The controversial "Christian psychology"

    1. Myth 1: Sigmund Freud is the father of psychology in the 19th century

      1. Arguments
        1. Psychology: literally "study of the soul or treaty"; Ancient Greek ψυχή, transliterated psyche , "psyche", "soul", "mental activity" and λογία, logy , "treaty" or "study". psychology explores concepts such as perception, attention, motivation, emotion, brain function, intelligence, thought, personality, personal relationships, consciousness and unconsciousness. See more )
        2. Sigmund Freud (1856-1939), from a humanistic stance (non-theistic) he developed modern psychology and psychoanalysis
        3. Purpose: to solve traumas, fixations, behavioral problems and emotional wounds.
      2. Fact: God is the father of psychology
        over a thousand years before Freud through Isaiah God teaches us that
        1. Heartbroken people need to be restored: He has sent me to comfort the brokenhearted (Isaiah 61:1)
        2. The dejected need good news
           
          has sent me to preach good news to the poor (Isaiah 61:1)
        3. That every tribulation needs a consolation: Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles (2 Corinthians1: 3-4)
        4. The heart not guarded, unhealthy, determines the quality of your life: Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it. (Proverbs 4: 23)
        5. Not only determines the quality of your life, but your level of holiness: For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, and slander. (Matthew 15: 19)
        6. The heart is deceitful, and deep, so you need help to discern what you have stored there
          1. The  heart is deceitful above all things, and beyond cure. Who can understand it? (Jeremiah 17: 9)  
          2. The purposes of a person´s heart are deep waters, but one who has insight draws them out. (Proverbs 20: 5)
          3. For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. (Hebrews 4: 12)
            • it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. (NIV)
            • It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires. (NLT)
        7. Therefore, does "Christian psychology" exists? This question could be answered more easily if we asked instead: Does God have something to teach us about the heart and emotions of humans?... Yes he does!
        8. God teaches how to heal human wounds ... and that´s what we´ll learn in this workshop.
    2. Myth 2: Psychology is the solution to Man's behavior and heart 

      1. Argument
        1. Psychology seeks to restore human beings and is considered by many as the solution to man´s behavioral and emotional problems. An alternative solution that seeks to replace God and the gospel.
      2. Fact: Men need Christ
        1. It is not about "restoring the human being in his sinful nature" with behavioral therapies, but to bring him to die on the cross to be born again.
          1. Dying through repentance, being born again through the faith in Christ: 
            What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? By no means! We are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.
            For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly also be united with him in a resurrection like his. For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body ruled by sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin because anyone who has died has been set free from sin. Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. (Romans 6: 1-8)
        2. Man needs the gospel because without the Spirit that comes from believing the gospel, man cannot reform his mind nor his willThose who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so. (Romans 8: 5-7)
        3. The Spirit is an indispensable component for us to feel the love of God and His consolation
          1. And hope does not put us to shame, because God´s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us. (Romans 5: 5)
          2. But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. (John 16: 7)
        4. Man may experience some relief by applying God's principles, such as forgiveness and getting things off of their chest but will never experience complete relief until God intervenes directly to give them a new birth by his Spirit.
    3. Myth 3: Once we are born again we do not need any of that "healing"

      1. mythical arguments
        1. Doesn't scripture say, "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come. The old has gone, the new is here!" (2 Corinthians 5: 17)?
        2. And in this context we give simplistic solutions like "all you need is to believe in Christ" or "all you need is salvation."
      2. Fact: The passage is applied out of context
        1. The context is the legal base for our sanctification:
          that you get 
          rid of the old and start a new life, but it does not to teach an automatic and immediate change by the new birth. (the immediate thing that happens is salvation, not transformation) "
          Either way, Christ’s love controls us. Since we believe that Christ died for all, we also believe that we have all died to our old life. 15 He died for everyone so that those who receive his new life will no longer live for themselves. Instead, they will live for Christ, who died and was raised for them... This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun! (2 Corinthians 5: 14-17)
        2. Which is corroborated in other passages:
          1. We need to get rid off the old man corrupted by its deceitful desires and eliminate all its old practices (Ephesians 4: 22-32)
          2. We need to renew the mind (Romans12: 1)
          3. We need to get rid of any bitter root (Hebrews 12: 15) ... Acquired after we came to Christ? Of course not!
          4. It is a gradual process in which we are transformed from glory to glory (2 Corinthians 3: 18)
          5. We start by being spiritual children: (1 Corinthians 3: 1-2)
          6. That is why God established leaders to perfect the saints ... to attain the whole measure of the fullness of Christ (Ephesians 4: 12-13)
        3. Experience confirms the same
          1. When we come to Christ, do our bad habits, our worldly mentality, our evil motives, our wounds and bitterness, and our actions totally and immediately disappear? No! ... transformation is the same gradual process as the conquering of the Promised Land.
        4. And it goes beyond the basic message of the Gospel, implies knowledge of the whole counsel of God (Acts 20: 27)
          1. By his divine power, God has given us everything we need for living a godly life. We have received all of this by coming to know him, the one who called us to himself by means of his marvelous glory and excellence. And because of his glory and excellence, he has given us great and precious promises. These are the promises that enable you to share his divine nature and escape the world’s corruption caused by human desires.(2Pet.1: 3-4)
    4. Myth 4: There is no need to dig up our past (our life before meeting Christ) in order to solve our present problems.

      1. Argument
        1. There is no need to examine our life before meeting Christ to look for things we have to heal in order to solve our present life.
      2. Fact: we need to identify what is wrong in our lives and get rid of it
        1. When did you acquire many of the bad habits that destroy your life? before or after Christ came to your life?
        2. When did you acquire the worldly mentality that must be renewed?  before or after Christ?
        3. How did you acquire the bitter roots that God commands us to remove? by painful events before or after Christ?
    5. Myth 5: The healing process that we teach is unscriptural

      1. Argument
        1. It´s only a psychological therapy
      2. Fact: The healing process we teach is what the Bible teaches
        1. To pour out our hearts before God (Psalm 22, Psalm 62: 8; 1Samuel1. 15.18; Lamentations 2: 19)
        2. To remove all bitterness (Ephesians 4: 31; Hebrews 12:15) through forgiveness (Ephesians 4: 32) ...
        3. To renew the mind (Ephesians 4: 23; Romans 12: 1) with the comfort that God gives us (through His word).
        4. To give thanks for everything: (1 Thessalonians 5: 18)
        5. Jesus, David, and other characters in the Bible applied these principles.
    6. Myth 6: It can not be possible that God will reveal to you something that for centuries has not been taught

      1. Argument: 
        1. If this is so important why is it revealed to you and until now?
      2. Reality:
        1. It has been revealed in the Bible all the time
        2. Many Christians, churches and pastors have implemented and applied it in many ministrations
        3. There are book publications that teach one or more of the principles.
        4. In this workshop we only identify its theory and we structure it because many "do not know exactly how they got healed" or "do not know how God did bring about" the healing.
  2. Why is this issue so important?

    The reality is that this topic is not taught because of the Enemy's opposition... he knows that it is very important. He knows that emotional wounds are: 
    1. Destroying lives and relationships (emotional wounds are the radioactive material that breaks our relationship with God and generates division like for example divorce)
    2. Causing fears, insecurities, dependencies, emotional emptiness. 
    3. Causing the major disease of the XXI century (depression)
    4. Increasing psychosomatic illnesses
    5. Causing the boom of psychology
    6. Sadly being passed on from generation to generation
    7. Causing people to repeat patterns of behavior (or manifest problems) until they deal with what's inside
    8. Steals your leadership (a leader needs maturity and emotional strength)
  3. What you can expect from the workshop

    1. Understand how the soul gets nourished and gets damaged
    2. Heal pain and past traumas
    3. Learn how to stay emotionally healthy on a daily basis.
    4. Remove clogs that hinder:
      1. Spiritual growth
      2. Healthy relationships
      3. A blessed life
      4. Development of emotional intelligence
        1. Learn to control your emotions when relating to people
        2. Learn to apply diplomacy
        3. Learn to develop leadership
      5. You from choosing the right partner to marry
      6. You from achieving emotional independence
      7. You from attaining physical health; often psychosomatic diseases cause
        1. arthritis
        2. heart issues
        3. migraine
        4. asthma
        5. skin problems
    5. What this workshop can´t do for you.
      1. It is not a magic wand
      2. Change an un repented heart
        You'll learn what is good, but nobody is going to do the job for you. 
        You will know, for example, that forgiveness frees you, but you need to believe this and to practice it yourself.
        1. Humility (to forgive and ask for forgiveness)
        2. Discipline (forming new habits and change reactions that hurt you and hurt others)
      3. There are problems that are not solved by emotional healing alone, they require other tools
        1. renewed mind
        2. liberation from demonic possession
        3. inherited curses
        4. Lack of leadership
  4. Purpose of this workshop

    1. To help you to fulfill God's purpose for your life

      1. Your healing is not for yourself only, but also for the sake of others and for God's sake
      2. That you may glorify God by doing all the works which God prepared in advance for you.
      3. That you may bring out your full potential and fulfill the purpose for your life, leaving your contribution to humanity.
      4. It is not for you to live a comfortable life but a responsible life
      5. That you receive all the rewards that were prepared for you.
      6. If you are outside God's plans for your life and you are not interested ... take this workshop, but with this caveat (warning):
        1. People who are not focused on their purpose (contribution) live self-absorbed lives and are more likely to live a life full of wounds.
    2. To enable you to minister to others.

      1. You cannot give what you do not have
      2. You can then go and make disciples
      3. Your healing is the certificate for sharing the workshop with others
  5. About the Workshop

    1. There are extensive Bible texts to support the workshop, but we won't mention all of them.

      1. We assume that you are reading the Bible on your own, and you have your times with God.
      2. As you read the Bible you'll find things you saw here and that is consistent with what you read.
    2. We will not get into theological issues and controversies

      1. Let's assume that we start from the same base:
        1. The existence of a righteous and loving God who has created everything
        2. The Bible is a book inspired by God (with divine revelation). 
    3. Why do we invite God to help us with these issues?

      1. Man is fallible; God is not.
      2. Your friendly psychologist, as we will learn in this training, is God. Your personal relationship with him is the essential component of your healing process.
      3. We use prayer as a means for healing
      4. It is he who does the restoration and healing of the heart (when you apply the principles that you'll see here)
      5. We will learn the principles that Jesus, David, and many of the prophets applied for their health.

  7. Gospel for the Soul (God's saving work on your emotional healing)

    Three components of the human being: Spirit, body and soul (1 Thessalonians 5: 23). Salvation is integral.
    1. Spirit:

      1. ... And the Lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; 17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.” (Genesis 2: 16-17)
      2. Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. The earth and the heavens fled from his presence, and there was no place for them. 12 And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done, as recorded in the books. 13 The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what they had done. 14 Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This lake of fire is the second death. 15 Anyone whose name was not found written in the Book of Life was thrown into the lake of fire. (Revelations 20: 11-15)
      3. I tell you the truth, unless you are born again, you cannot see the Kingdom of God.... Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit (John 3: 3,6)
      4. God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. (Ephesians 2: 5) .
      5. When you were dead in your sins and when your sinful nature was not yet cut away, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins. (Colossians 2: 13)
    2. Body:

      1. Surely He took up our pain and bore our suffering... And by His wounds we are healed.  (Isaiah 53: 4, 5)
      2.  For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him should have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day. (John 6: 40)
      3. No one can come to me unless the Father, who sent me, draws them, and I will raise them up at the last day (John 6: 44)
      4. And if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of His Spirit who lives in you. (Romans 8: 11)
      5. For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. 22 For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive. 23 But each in turn: Christ the firstfruits. Then, when he comes, those who belong with him. (1 Corinthians 15: 21-23)
      6. Then, when our dying bodies have been transformed into bodies that will never die, this Scripture will be fulfilled: “Death is swallowed up in victory.55 O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?(1 Corinthians 15:51-55)
    3. And the Soul ?, Our emotional pain?

      1. Jesus also came to heal the wounded hearts:
        1. The Spirit of the Lord God is upon Me, because the Lord has anointed Me to preach good tidings to the poor; he has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, And the opening of the prison to those who are bound; To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn, To console those who mourn in Zion, to give them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they may be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified.” And they shall rebuild the old ruins, they shall raise up the former desolations, and they shall repair the ruined cities, the desolations of many generations.(Is.61: 1-4) (Luke 4: 18-20)
        2. He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. (Psalm 147: 3)
        3. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Comforter, to help you and be with you forever (John 14: 16)
      2. It has compassion
        1. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. (Mathew 9:36)
      3. The Incarnation: He did not send an angel, he himself came!
        1. “ The virgin will conceive and give birth to a Son, and they will call Him Immanuel,” which means, “God with us.” (Mathew 1: 23)
        2. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made... The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. (John 1:1 -3;14).
        3. In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Jesus Christ: Who being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage, rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant , being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death - even death on a cross. (Philippians 2:5-8)
        4. "Hey, I'm with you here"
      4. ID: understanding and empathy of God
        1. He was despised and rejected by mankind, a man of suffering, and familiar with pain. Like one from whom people hide their faces he was despised, and we held him in low esteem...Surely he took our pain and bore our suffering, yet we considered him punished by God, stricken by Him, and afflicted. (Isaiah 53:3-4)
        2. Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might break the power of him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil15 and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death. 16 For surely it is not angels he helps, but Abraham’s descendants. 17 For this reason he had to be made like them,fully human in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people. 18 Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted. (Hebrews 2:14-18)
        3. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. 16 Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need. (Hebrews 4:15-16)
        4. He was born in a stable, his physical father died in his youth, he got tired, sweated, he was hungry, he was persecuted, belittled, humiliated, betrayed, abused, he suffered injustices, losses, abuses, opposition, etc.
      5. He gives us his love, consolation, future and hope.
        1. For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. (Jeremiah 29:11)
        2. For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:16)
        3. And hope does not put us to shame, because God´s love has been poured out into our hearts trough the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us. (Romans 5:5)
        4. But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Comforter will not come to you. but if I go, I will send him to you. (John 16:7)
        5. If you love me, obey my commandments. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Comforter to help you and be with you forever. 17  The Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept  him, because it neither sees Him or know Him. But you know him, for and will be in you. (John 14:15-17).
        6. Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God. For just as we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ, so also our comfort abounds through Christ. If we are distressed, it is for your comfort and salvation; if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which produces in you patient endurance of the same sufferings we suffer. And our hope for you is firm, because we know that just as you share in our sufferings, so also you share in our comfort.(2 Corinthians 1: 3-7)
        7. And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to his purpose. For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters. And those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified. What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? As it is written: “For your sake we face death all day long;we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.” No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 8: 28-39)
        8. ... God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us. (Romans 5: 5).
        9. You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ. (Romans 8: 9)
